30 Park Place is pleased to report that Andrew Jones KC has successfully prosecuted the case of R v Darren Steel, resulting in a conviction for the murder of his older brother, Martin Steel, following a retrial at Swansea Crown Court.

The case concerned the killing of 41‑year‑old Martin Steel, a father of two, who was violently attacked in his own home in May 2023 by his younger brother, Darren Steel. The court heard that the siblings had a turbulent “love‑hate relationship”, and although the defendant claimed he had acted in self‑defence, the jury rejected this account.

Prosecutor Andrew Jones KC outlined how the victim was discovered by his mother after neighbours raised concerns. She found her son slumped in his living room, covered in blood, having suffered severe blunt‑force injuries to the face, neck and voice box. The prosecution described the attack as a “fit of extreme rage”, emphasising that the level of continued force inflicted could not be justified as self‑defence.

Evidence also showed that the defendant had exhibited escalating violence in the days preceding the killing. Despite the catastrophic injuries inflicted, he fled the scene without providing any assistance, leaving his mother to discover her son fatally wounded.

Following the guilty verdict, South Wales Police described the killing as the “ultimate betrayal”, noting the profound and ongoing impact on the family, who were forced to endure two trials in their search for justice.

Darren Steel has now been sentenced to approximately 20 years’ imprisonment.
