Hywel Evans, instructed by Daniel Knowles of Satchell Moran Solicitors, successfully represented two claimants in a civil jury trial against the Police, arising from a stop, search, and detention.
Following a contested trial and evidence from four police officers, the jury found that:
- Both claimants had been unlawfully handcuffed
- The younger claimant had been unlawfully detained
- The police officers’ actions were motivated by race
Hywel also secured aggravated damages, resulting in awards exceeding basic compensatory damages and reflecting the seriousness of the conduct.
The case involved detailed cross-examination of police witnesses and complex issues concerning police powers, unlawful detention, race discrimination, and damages in civil actions against the police.
