Julia Cox is an experienced criminal practitioner with a busy Crown Court practice. She is a Grade 4 Prosecutor and member of the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) Panel.

Julia is instructed regularly to prosecute and defend in cases involving serious violence, serious sexual offences, fraud, money laundering and organised crime.

Julia’s meticulous case preparation and attention to detail has led to instructions in high-value and complex matters, including multi-handed conspiracies and historic sexual abuse trials involving multiple complainants. She is particularly skilled at handling vulnerable defendants and witnesses, and is known for her calm, clear communication throughout the trial process.

Julia has significant experience of dealing with cases where there are issues of fitness to plead and stand trial or where psychiatric evidence needs to be considered.

Julia has over ten years’ experience in regulatory law and is regularly instructed by local authorities in prosecutions involving food safety, environmental law, statutory nuisance and health and safety breaches. She is experienced in licensing enforcement and POCA proceedings.

Julia previously worked in a solicitors firm, gaining valuable insight into the needs of both professional and lay clients.

Crime

  • R v C (2025) – Successfully defended an individual charged with causing serious injury to a baby. The case involved expert evidence from paediatricians and radiologists.
  • R v E (2025) – Successfully defendant an individual charged with serious sexual allegations against an ex-partner. The case involved extensive telephone communications between the parties and applications under s.41 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999.
  • R v J (2024) – Successfully defended an individual accused of historic sexual offences by multiple complainants. The issues involved s.41 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 and previous false complaints.
  • R v M (2024) – Defence of an individual for domestic violence, threats to kill and sexual offending during the course of a marriage. The case involved the use of intermediaries as well as ongoing issues as to the defendant’s mental health.
  • R v W (2024) – Defended a deaf defendant accused of sexual offending. The case involved the use of lip speakers.
  • R v K (2024) – Successfully defended an individual accused of sexual offending against a child. The case involved the use of intermediaries for the complainant and s.28 pre-recorded cross-examination.
  • R v R (2024) – Successfully defended an individual accused of sexual offending against young children. The defendant was extremely vulnerable and required the use of an intermediary. This case involved s.28 pre-recorded cross-examination and significant adjustments to the trial process to ensure the defendant could fully participate in the Court proceedings.
  • R v S (2023) – Defence of an individual on allegations of conspiracy to money launder which involved the use of cryptocurrency.
  • R v T (2023) – Defence of an individual found unfit to plead and stand trial. Defendant was accused of sexual offending against young children.
  • R v R (2022) – Prosecuted a defendant for historic sexual offences by multiple complainants. Issues of bad character and s.41 arose during the course of the trial.
  • Operation Heatwave (2022) – Prosecution junior in a multi-handed conspiracy to defraud. Convictions secured against all defendants.
  • R v W (2022) – Prosecution of an individual for serious sexual offences against multiple complainants. The case involved witnesses from abroad, s.41 and bad character. There were significant issues regarding telephone communications. The case went to the Court of Appeal.
  • R v M (2022) – Prosecution of an individual for serious sexual offences. The sexual offending took place in the presence of children. The defendant received an extended sentence.
  • R v K (2022) – Defence junior in a multi-handed murder. Defendant acquitted of murder but convicted of the lesser offence of manslaughter.
  • R v I (2020 and 2021) – Defence of an individual accused of Conspiracy to supply Cocaine, Heroin and Cannabis. Guilty plea entered to Conspiracy to supply Cannabis. The case was aborted initially due to the COVID pandemic. The retrial took place in 2021. The defendant was acquitted of the Conspiracies to Supply Cocaine and Heroin.
  • R v G (2019) – Defence of a youth charged with possession with intent to supply cocaine. Successfully argued the youth was a victim of modern slavery under the Modern Slavery Act 2015. Prosecution offered no evidence.
  • Operation Fardel (Series 4) (2019) – Prosecution counsel in a two-defendant money laundering case arising from phishing fraud totalling over £2 million. £450,000 laundered through the defendants’ bank accounts.
  • R v S (2019) – Defence of a young man charged with sexual offences against two complainants under 16. Successfully opposed prosecution’s application to amend indictment after four-year delay.
  • R v B (2019) – Defence of a business partner accused of running a fraudulent enterprise.
  • R v Q (2018) – Successfully defended a man charged with historic sexual offences.
  • hallenged admissibility of bad character where earlier offences were denied.
  • Operation Fardel (Series 5) (2017) – Junior prosecution counsel in a multi-handed money laundering case. £1.3 million processed through accounts and converted into foreign currency via the Post Office.
  • v L (2017) – Defence of a woman charged with indecency with a child and child cruelty. Acquitted after a ten-day trial.
  • R v B (2016) – Defence in a three-month multi-handed conspiracy to supply heroin involving 27 defendants from across the UK.
  • R v K & P (2012) – Defence junior in a multi-complainant historic sex case. Involved analysis of complex joinder, severance and bad character issues.

Regulatory Crime

  • R v RA (2018) – Prosecution of a car dealer for fraud and forgery. The defendant misrepresented vehicles and forged documents to deceive consumers.
  • R v C, S & R (2017) – Prosecution for the unauthorised use of trademarks. Involved Newton Hearing and complex POCA proceedings concerning piercing the corporate veil.
  • R v CT (2017) – Prosecution of a takeaway owner under Food Hygiene Regulations following inspection. The case was brought on behalf of the Local Authority.
