Dan Jones is a specialist criminal barrister, with a strong reputation for handling serious and complex cases across the criminal spectrum.

He is instructed in equal measure by the defence and prosecution, and appears as sole counsel, led junior and leading junior.

After a decade of practice in London at 5 St Andrew’s Hill, Dan returned to Wales in 2023 to join 30 Park Place. He is a Grade 4 prosecutor and a member of the Serious Crime, Proceeds of Crime and RASSO panels. His criminal practice spans homicide, serious violence, sexual offences, drugs, and organised crime.

Known for a sharp eye for detail, fair approach, and his strategic and measured judgement, Dan combines technical expertise with practical insight across criminal proceedings.

  • Operation Zetland – Junior to Mark Cotter KC in successful prosecution for murder.
  • Operation Munroe – Junior to Mark Cotter KC in prosecution for murder. The case involved pioneering wood fragment analysis and complex legal issues on causation and hearsay.
  • Operation Tamworth – Led by Martin Goudie KC in a multi-handed murder trial. No eyewitnesses. Evidence included detailed CCTV, mobile phone data and enhanced statistical DNA analysis.

  • Operation Venetic (Encrochat) – Defendants charged with conspiracy to murder, firearms, drugs, and counterfeit offences. Reportedly the first successful conspiracy to murder case arising from Encrochat evidence.
  • Independent Inquiry Relating to Afghanistan – Instructed by the Ministry of Defence as counsel in inquiry into alleged extra-judicial killings by UK Special Forces.
  • R v OP – Old Bailey – Junior alone for bus driver charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Acquitted at retrial.
  • R v MB – Junior alone in defence of an attempted murder allegation involving multiple stab wounds. Defendant acquitted.
  • R v DCN & AS – Led junior in successful prosecution of two defendants for attempted murder.
  • R v CB & NH – Led junior (led by Erim Mushtaq) defending in high-profile child sex abuse case. Also appeared in Court of Appeal following Attorney-General’s reference for unduly lenient sentence.
  • R v GH – Junior alone in the successful prosecution of a defendant for historic sexual offences dating to the 1980s. Opposed privately instructed King’s Counsel.
  • R v AM – Acting for a defendant charged with rape. The jury returned an acquittal in under an hour.
  • Operation Mayland – Leading junior prosecuting organised crime group supplying over 100kg of cocaine across South Wales.
  • Operation Silver – Leading junior for defendant in multi-kilo Class A drug conspiracy.
  • R v M (Unreported) – Successful appeal against sentence in a domestic section 18 case.
  • R v B [2023] EWCA Crim 441 – Junior alone in successfully resisting appeal against confiscation order. Case raised novel points on tainted gifts. Also opposed application for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.
